The Wellbeing Triad
In recent years, there’s been a much-needed shift in focus towards employee wellbeing, with mental health and work-life balance taking centre stage. This has brought many positive outcomes, such as increased flexibility, engagement, and overall job satisfaction. However, in some cases, businesses may feel that the focus has tipped too far towards employee wellbeing, potentially at the expense of productivity and business goals.
For wellbeing to truly be part of a sustainable workplace culture, it’s about finding the right balance. Employee needs and business priorities should not be in opposition; they should work hand in hand. When employees are well-supported, they perform better—creating a win-win for both individuals and the company.
This is where the wellbeing triad comes in. It recognises that wellbeing is a shared responsibility across three key areas:
- Employee Perspective: Employees need to feel supported in managing stress and mental health, but they also need clear expectations and accountability in their roles. Wellbeing initiatives should empower employees without lowering performance standards.
- Manager Perspective: Managers play a critical role in maintaining this balance. They must be skilled not only in supporting their teams’ wellbeing but also in ensuring that performance and productivity remain high. Effective leadership helps strike that balance between empathy and results. Our Nurture programme
- Workplace Environment: The overall workplace culture, policies, and systems must support both wellbeing and business objectives. Initiatives like Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) or Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAs) are valuable, but they should complement a culture of accountability and purpose.
By addressing all three dimensions of the wellbeing triad, companies can create a balanced and effective approach to employee wellbeing that drives both personal and organisational success
For managers and leaders specifically, see our NURTURE programme, and for employees our catalogue has many workshops that will be of value.
